An excavator final drive motor converts hydraulic power into the torque needed to turn the tracks and move the machine. A complete final drive motor consists of two primary components:
the hydraulic travel motor and the planetary final drive gearbox.
The hydraulic travel motor receives flow from the excavator's main hydraulic pump. The planetary gearbox then reduces rotational speed and multiplies torque to turn the track sprocket.
A complete assembly is most commonly called a final drive motor or final drive, although you may also hear terms such as travel motor, track motor, propel motor, or walking motor.
